World Refugee Day was first celebrated on June 20, 2001, on the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention. Today marks 70 years!
The day is now observed around the world to draw attention to the plight of refugees, to spotlight the bravery and strength of people forced to flee their home countries to escape war or oppression. It is time to mobilize political will and resources to urgently help these people rebuild their lives far from their homelands. According to the United Nations, more than 82 million people are now forcibly displaced worldwide; around half of whom are under the age of 18.
These people are not coming to take your jobs or to steal your country or cultural identity. They only want to live in peace and safety, and to give their children a chance to thrive. I have seen refugee camps up close. You would never want to live like that. Neither do they.
